Thomas D. Helmholdt is a shareholder in the firm's Troy office. He joined Young Basile in 1985.

Practice Summary:

Mr. Helmholdt concentrates his practice on patent/trademark prosecution, patent searches, validity studies, infringement opinions, and freedom to operate studies. His focus is on mechanical and electrical technologies, including automobiles and medical devices.

He frequently manages the filing of international and foreign patent applications.

Mr. Helmholdt seeks to understand his clients business as well as their technology. His approach is to work as a strategic partner to his clients, helping to acquire intellectual property rights that provide economic advantages and create meaningful barriers to competition.

Mr. Helmholdt is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan. Prior to becoming an attorney, he worked as an engineer in the construction industry, and as a plant engineer.

He has worked closely with automotive companies and suppliers, as well as smaller companies and research universities. His clients have included makers of medical devices, electronic communication equipment, sporting goods, semiconductor fabrication equipment, robots, and piezoelectric actuators.
